The person you will actually be working with

Outlaw Web is David Paxton. I have been designing websites and working on search for businesses in Edinburgh and across Scotland since 2003.

Who I am

I started building websites in 2003 and I have been doing it ever since. Outlaw Web is deliberately small: when you call, you get me, and when your site is being designed or your SEO campaign is being run, it is me doing it.

That is not a limitation I apologise for. It is the reason clients stay. Some of the businesses I look after have been with me for well over a decade, which only happens if somebody picks up the phone and things get done.

I work mostly with small and medium sized businesses: trades, professional services, retailers and companies whose enquiry form is effectively their front door. Big enough projects to be interesting, small enough that the person paying for the website is usually the person I am talking to.

How I work

Four things that shape every project.

I plan before I design

The most valuable part of a website project is deciding what each page has to say and prove. Get that right and the design has something to do. Get it wrong and you have an attractive site nobody enquires through.

Design and SEO are the same job

I do not treat them as separate projects. The structure that makes a site clear to a visitor is usually the structure that makes it legible to a search engine, so they are planned together from the start.

Bespoke, never a stock theme

Layouts are built around your services and your customers. If a site looks like a template with a logo dropped in, that is because it is one, and visitors notice more than people think.

I tell you what I actually think

If a page is not worth building, if a keyword is not worth chasing, or if your existing site is fine and you do not need a new one, I will say so. It costs me a project occasionally and it is still the right way to work.

What you can expect

A first conversation that is free and has no obligation attached to it. A written plan and a fixed quote before any work starts, so you know what you are buying. Design you see and approve before it is built. Testing on real devices rather than a hope that it works on a phone.

After launch, a walkthrough so you can edit your own content, and the option of ongoing maintenance or SEO services if you want the technical side handled. And throughout, one person who knows your project rather than a rota of account managers.

What clients say

Have had our company’s site managed by David for over 15 years. Always receive a prompt response when we require any updates.

Charles McAleavy, Director

Based in Edinburgh

I work from Gilmour Road on the south side of Edinburgh, which means meeting clients face to face is genuinely easy rather than something I offer and then avoid. Coffee in the city centre, your office in Leith or Stockbridge, or a site visit if that is what the project needs.

Beyond the city I work across the Lothians, Fife, the Borders and central Scotland, and with clients in Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Perth, Inverness and further afield by video call and screen sharing. Plenty of long standing clients I speak to weekly and see once a year, and that suits everybody fine.
